The famous Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres Festivities!

One of the best times to visit São Miguel is during the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres Festivities. Whether you are religious or not, this is one of the most important festivals on the island. In addition, it brings together people from all over the island and many emigrants.

The festivities take place every year in May, on the fifth Sunday after Easter. So check the dates before you book your trip. Below, we explain where the festivities come from and what you can see.

The image of Senhor Santo Cristo

In the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, in Ponta Delgada, there is a wooden image of Christ. Its fine details are impressive. Its ornaments of precious stones, pearls, diamonds and gold are impressive too.

According to tradition, the image dates from the early 16th century. Later, Pope Paul III gave it to two nuns. They had travelled to Rome to ask for permission to found the first convent for women on the island.

How the devotion began

The devotion began with the great earthquake of 11 April 1700. During the tremors, a group carried the image through the streets in a procession. Then a stronger tremor made the image fall to the ground.

However, the image was not damaged. According to the story, the earth stopped shaking from that moment on. That is how this extraordinary devotion began.

The festivities in Ponta Delgada

For several days, the festivities fill the whole city of Ponta Delgada. First, the lights on the front of the Sanctuary are switched on. Then comes the highlight: the great procession through the main streets.

The “promises” are also well known. Many people ask for help with health, family or other problems. In return, they make sacrifices they have promised to Senhor Santo Cristo.

In addition, there are always many “barraquinhas”, as we call food stalls in the Azores. They sell popcorn, ice cream, snacks and drinks. Local craftspeople also sell their products.
