Medium-term stays: how to fill your holiday rental in low season

Article updated in October 2026.

Not every guest comes for a weekend. More and more people want to stay in the Azores for several weeks or months: remote workers, people on temporary projects, families relocating or anyone who simply wants to enjoy the island slowly. For holiday rental owners, these stays can keep the house busy, especially in low season.

Who books medium-term stays?

  • Digital nomads and remote workers: they need fast internet, a comfortable desk and peace and quiet.
  • Professionals on assignment: doctors, teachers, technicians and consultants who come to São Miguel for a few weeks or months.
  • Families and retirees: who want to get to know the island before deciding to move here.

Advantages for the owner

1. A full calendar in low season

Between November and March there are fewer tourists. A one-month booking at that time makes up for weeks that would otherwise stay empty.

2. Fewer check-ins, lower costs

Fewer check-ins, fewer departure cleans and less laundry. The nightly price is usually lower, but the margin can be similar, because the cost per stay drops a lot.

3. Guests who look after the house

People who stay longer treat the house as their own. Even so, set clear rules from the start: mid-stay cleaning, bed linen changes and what happens if something breaks.

What to prepare

  • Fast, stable internet and a work area with a good chair and light.
  • A well-equipped kitchen, a washing machine and storage space.
  • A monthly price that suits the season and clear payment rules.
  • Cleaning and a check of the house halfway through the stay.

Before you accept long stays, check the right legal framework for your house: up to what length it remains a holiday rental, and when it becomes a tenancy with its own contract and rules. If in doubt, talk to us: we help you choose the best option for each season.
